Supper Time

Sliced maters, fried taters, green beans
Squash an' sweet corn, sweet peas too
Onions fresh an' long shoots green
Big ol' ham hocks fallin' apart in them beans
Sliced up cuke an' radishes spicy red
Oh Lordy, cornbread golden in a cast iron skillet
Hot and steamy from that glowin' woodstove
Table laden an' over flowin'
Red checkered tablecloth almost hidden
Plates a clatterin', glasses clinkin'
Come an' get it, now, come on here
Its supper time children, suppertime.

Battle for Morning

Fuzzy mornin', cold mornin'
Don't want to wake mornin'
Worn ol' quilt up to my neck
It is a losin' battle though
Fought hard against a cheerful robin
And the smell of bacon cookin'.

Abandoned Memories

Sifting through memories in the quiet of night
Walking down paths seldom traveled
One memory giving way to another
As if one walks through a house
Long abandoned by those who dwelt there.
Pushing open a door and looking in
Seeing dusty remembrances
Walking in and picking up memories
With the curiosity of a detective
Wondering just who lived there
Why these memories were left behind
Why that part of life was abandoned.

Foggy Lake

Thought the lake reaches out
Far, so far into the distance
That the farthest shore
Cannot be seen.
The fog, thick and roiling
Lays cotton candy sticky
Covering the horizon
Hiding the morning.

Lonely Night

Standing quietly on the front porch
The clouds move quickly to cover
Then reveal the crescent moon.
Though it is not so very late
And the night is just lovely
I stand alone in the midst of homes
Wondering if anyone else
Even noticed.

Spring Songs

Standing in the dark of night I hear them
For the first time in an unsteady Spring
They sing out, calling their names
Little peepers, tree frogs, occasional bullfrog
Calling, calling, singing in homespun harmonies.
Peep peep a deep, chee-peep
Echoing in the distant wetlands they sing.
Sitting on the just blooming branch
Head just above water they croak and call.
Gaaruump a dump rump rump bump
The bullfrog carefully adds the bass line
As if he has just seen the music for the first time.
"It is finally Spring", they call and sing.

Peepers

The sleepers have arisen
The peepers are awake
They sing for their beloved
Until they see a snake
